APIs Are Designed for Automation — So Are Attacks
Modern applications rely on APIs to process requests, exchange data, and connect services. Attackers can exploit that same automation to send thousands of requests faster than any human user could.
Unlimited Requests Create Opportunities for Abuse
Without effective rate limiting, attackers may attempt credential stuffing, scrape sensitive information, enumerate user accounts, or overwhelm expensive application functions.
Authentication Doesn't Automatically Prevent Abuse
Even legitimate API keys and authenticated accounts can be misused. A compromised token may allow attackers to generate massive request volumes while appearing to be an authorized client.
State of Product reveals what AI still hasn’t solved
80% of product professionals say AI helps them ship faster, but customers aren’t seeing value any sooner. Atlassian’s State of Product 2027 explores the gains AI is delivering and the challenges that remain, from decision-making that hasn’t kept pace to gut instinct overriding customer evidence.
Resource-Intensive Endpoints Are Especially Vulnerable
Search functions, file uploads, report generation, database queries, and AI-powered endpoints can consume significant computing resources. Excessive requests may create outages or unexpected infrastructure costs.
Simple IP-Based Limits Aren't Always Enough
Attackers can distribute requests across multiple addresses or accounts. Effective protection often requires limits based on user identity, API keys, endpoint sensitivity, and behavioral patterns.
Make API Abuse Difficult and Expensive
Implement adaptive rate limits, enforce request quotas, monitor unusual traffic, protect resource-intensive endpoints, and establish alerts for abnormal consumption. A secure API shouldn't just verify who is calling — it should control how much damage any caller can do.
Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads
Blu Dot used Roku Ads Manager to drive incredible results for its furniture sales event. Its strategy hinged on custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.
“Roku has been a top performer,” said Blu Dot’s Claire Folkestad. “We have seen…CPMs lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”
